Family Responsibilities

family-responsibilities

Being a caregiver isn’t easy. But it doesn’t mean you’re an unreliable employee.

What Is Family Responsibility Discrimination?

Family responsibility discrimination is an umbrella term for workplace discrimination based on biases about how employees with caregiving responsibilities will or should act.

When an employee’s family responsibilities change, as when a child is born or a family member falls ill and requires caretaking, employers may act upon discriminatory biases – assuming, for example, that the employee will be unreliable or less dedicated to the job.

Legal Protections Against Family Responsibility Discrimination

If you’re a family caregiver experiencing discrimination in the workplace, there are laws to protect you.

Discrimination against family caregivers is prevalent, and many state and local governments have created their own caregiver protections. These laws also protect you from retaliation if you report discriminatory practices, and can help you recover damages or reinstatement to your job if you are unfairly terminated.
