Debra Katz Weighs in on Impact of Depp-Heard Trial

KMB partner Debra Katz recently discussed the effects of the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard verdict in the Associated Press article, “Depp-Heard trial: Advocates fear chilling effect on accusers.”

After Johnny Depp won a $10 million defamation judgement against ex-wife Amber Heard, who accused him of domestic violence during their marriage, many advocates and legal experts fear that the outcome will have a chilling effect on women coming forward with abuse claims. However, as Ms. Katz points out, the Depp-Heard case was “a thing of itself,” and while it highlights the “deep misogyny” that “still pervades our justice system,” one shouldn’t assume that it will have a widespread impact.

Instead, she says, we should look at more consequential victories, such as Harvey Weinstein’s failed appeal of his rape conviction and his 23-year prison sentence. In that case, the jurors “saw through every single sexist argument that Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers made about [his accusers],” Ms. Katz said. “That’s a much more consequential jury verdict and court victory than anything this Depp-Heard thing suggests.”
